An adoption in which the adoptive parents, one or both of whom are already related to the child, petitions to become the child’s legal parents are considered a related adoption. The most common example of this type of adoption is the stepparent adoption. In a stepparent adoption, the new spouse of a biological parent of a child becomes the child’s legal parent. In this type of adoption both parent and the stepparent must petition the Court.
